Explanation
This illustration displays North Dakota’s State Assessment (NDSA) results for Student Achievement in 2017 for students attending public schools in the 3rd grade through the 8th grade represented on the horizontal axis by subject, English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. A comparison of student assessment growth rate is represented on the vertical axis which shows how the students performed in NDSA across the two years in 2015-2017.

The basic structure of measuring the student’s yearly performance in NDSA expects elementary and middle schools to ensure that students are proficient in each of the two assessed subjects. Yet, given that every school has a different starting point on their journey of improvement, measuring how each school helps students grow from year to year with momentum toward attaining targets established for the school encourages all students to grow and improve in mastering skills which will be needed to be successful in high school.

School comparisons are displayed in the following quadrants represented on the horizontal axis (Achievement) and vertical axis (Student Growth):

1st Quadrant (High Growth/High Achievement): This upper-right quadrant displays schools exceeding student achievement in 2017 and growth expectations through three years of taking the NDSA by ELA and Math.

2nd Quadrant (High Growth/Low Achievement): This upper-left quadrant displays schools exceeding growth expectations even when not meeting student achievement levels through three years NDSA results. Schools who experiencing low achievement may have more opportunity for growth than schools experiencing high achievement.

3rd Quadrant (Low Growth/Low Achievement): This lower-left quadrant displays schools not meeting student achievement levels in 2017 and growth expectations through three years NDSA results

4th Quadrant (Low Growth/High Achievement): This lower-right quadrant displays schools exceeding student achievement levels in 2017 and not meeting growth expectations across three years of NDSA results.
